OkCupid Guy 2: you are so fucking sexy!
OkCupid Guy 2: you look divinely ravishing in glasses..
Me: haha
Me: they are part of my face
OkCupid Guy 2: I feel the same way about mine..
Me: no, mine are literally part of my face. they don't come off
OkCupid Guy 2: which is a shame, because I have blue eyes that are very sensitive to light, so mine are tinted.
OkCupid Guy 2: you sleep with them on?
Me: they don't come off. so, yes.
OkCupid Guy 2: wow, you're serious!
OkCupid Guy 2: how did that happen?
Me: It's a surgical thing. I'd rather not get into it because it's hard to talk about.
OkCupid Guy 2: that's ok.
Me: So, yours are tinted. How did that happen?
OkCupid Guy 2: I got mine tinted as much as I legally could. sunlight does a real number on my eyes..
Me: Surgically tinted?
OkCupid Guy 2: no, just by the eye glass store. I got the darkest tint they had.
Me: Oh. I thought you meant your eyes.

I feel like I need to write a lot of things down lately. Not bad things. Just things that I have been feeling particularly passionate about. But I am wiped out so I will make a list.

- I am graduating on May 13th, 2009
- There will be a party at the Bikini Lounge afterward
- Shane will be DJing said party and we will all dance 'til we can't dance no mo'.
- I got in to my graduate program at ASU.
- I'm going to get my Master's of Social Work at the downtown campus.
- I'm putting my name on a wait list for an adorable one bedroom apartment.
- My job is shuttin' down as May 2010.
- My online biology class is reeeeeally shitty.
- My sign language 202 class is even worse.
- I have to take a class on human anatomy before I can enroll in any classes for graduate school.
- No, this does not affect my graduation status this spring.
- I read my Biology book for about 3 or 4 hours today.
- I was flirted with while I read.
- I will heed the warnings and I will not reciprocate.
- I need to go to the dentist.
- I'm having a great life these days.
- I saw M. Ward on Sunday at the Marquee Theater and it was wonderful.
- Dinner before M. Ward was totally worth being late to the show for.
- Still working on photos for Courtney's new album.
- Charles' EP release show is on May 9th and you better be there for the most amazing cover song in the world.
- Courtney's new album comes out on my birthday (July 31)!

- That's it for now.

Nights like the past few have made everything in my life so so much better. Not like there was ever anything wrong with it...

My graduation party is being held at Bikini Lounge on Wednesday May 13, 2009 starting at 9pm. Shane is DJing so be prepared to dance your pretty little face off.

If you can read this, you are invited. Yes. Even you. You too! Mmmhm, talking to you.

Be there or be stoops.

I just had the most amazing photo shoot with Courtney Marie Andrews today.

The fine folks at the Hotel San Carlos gave us free access to a hotel room and we got some amazing pictures for her album cover and promo stuff.

I'm feeling really great about how it all came out and can't wait to sit down and edit all the shots. I want to post them online but we are trying to save them until a few weeks before the album release which is great because then I'll have time to edit.

Now time to read for my biology midterm.

If I Knew You Were Coming, I’d Have Baked A Cake [24 Feb 2009|01:51pm]

I’m still trying to find direction for this blog –

I do think that before the blog will have direction, I have to have direction and tie up my loose ends in general. I’ve been brainstorming and writing in notebooks and reading blogs and organizing my thoughts and my email accounts and RSS feeds in an effort to figure out what projects I want to devote time to.

There are so many things that I am passionate about but I haven’t figured out a way to make time for those things yet. It’s difficult, to say the least.

I’ll get there, I think.

4. Apply to graduate school [23 Feb 2009|03:47pm]

Last night I finalized and printed my graduate school application to ASU’s School of Social Work.

After lunch with Jon I hand-delivers it to the office and shortly after received an email back with confirmation that it was complete and in the stack waiting to be read.

I will find out in the next three or so weeks if I was accepted. Let’s hope this works and, if it does, that I can afford to go.

You can start your candlelight vigil now.

22. Read at least 25 books from my personal library. [15 Feb 2009|07:17pm]

Sometime in the past week or so I finished The Color Purple and started Speaking With the Angel and Reading Lolita in Tehran.

The Color Purple is as wonderful as everyone says it is — I still haven’t seen the movie. Is it worth it?

8. Cook dinner for a friend. [15 Feb 2009|07:12pm]

I unintentionally completed this resolution so I don’t know if it counts.

My parents are out of town so I took it upon myself to mess up the kitchen and bake and cook myself a meal. I’m not very good at portioning and my friend Dario can’t leave work to get lunch so I packaged up a container to go.

Dinner was penne pasta with shrimp in garlic cream sauce.

 • penne pasta
 • heavy cream
 • white wine
 • garlic
 • onion
 • fresh basil
 • cayenne pepper
 • thyme
 • kosher salt/pepper
 • olive oil
 • canned diced tomatoes
 • parmesean cheese
 • shrimp

Boil penne pasta. Sautee olive oil, diced onion, garlic and white wine in a saucepan. Reduce until it starts to thicken and add heavy cream, thyme, salt, pepper and cayenne. Add raw shrimp and cook until pink. Add penne pasta, parmesean cheese, diced tomatoes and fresh basil.

Tada!

2. Bake cupcakes from scratch [15 Feb 2009|07:03pm]

Today Felicia came over and we baked lemon cupcakes with raspberry cream cheese frosting. I’ve never baked cupcakes from scratch and for this being our first excursion, it went quite well.

Of course, now I have enough cupcakes to fill a zoo. I delivered some to a friend today with dinner (another resolution that I actually forgot about) and still have more deliveries to make during the week.

I’ll take pictures when I get some new one frosted. Maybe next time I’ll add sprinkles.

Small Things, Not Great Achievements [30 Jan 2009|11:45pm]

Meghan: Tell me something. What are the top ten small things that make you happiest?

 • saltine crackers with peanut butter
 • the music of courtney marie andrews
 • monsoon season
 • my camera
 • wild cherry pepsi
 • pineapple air fresheners
 • dresses from anthropologie
 • cherry blossoms
 • friday night lights
 • espresso whipped cream from Lux

Your top ten?

34. Buy and wear more dresses / 35. Wear fancy clothes on un-fancy occassions [23 Jan 2009|07:30pm]

Meghan reminded me that I started one of my resolutions last night by dressing up in a fancy dress where it was completely inappropriate.

Last night, Morgan, Chelsea, and I went to Carly’s for a drink before stopping by Modified (and missing Dario’s first show) and then heading to Lost Leaf for more drinks and Dario’s jazz show (Black Bear Ensemble). At Carly’s we had run into Dave, Fil, and Andre and afterward, after dropping Dave off at home, Fil and Andre met us at Lost Leaf. Next up was Bikini Lounge, drinks, and from there — well, that is where this story ends.

First attempt: Success!

Driving in the Sun, Looking Out for Number One [20 Jan 2009|09:43pm]

This morning I woke up early to, of course, watch the inauguration. Have you guys heard of this Obama guy? I’m still a little skeptical but he seems like the kind of guy you’d like to have a beer with.

I guess today also marks my first day as Photo Editor at State Press Magazine for ASU. I’m not quite sure how it happened but I was emailed and offered the job after I had only asked for a position as photography. Of course I accepted (however horribly unqualified I may be) and I started doling out photo assignments to the other photographers and out of the four people I contacted, only one hasn’t responded yet.

This job might be the beginning of my New Year’s Resolution to take on more than I think I can handle but I am definitely ready to try. This is precisely when I need to start my resume building and this is a position that would be difficult to get with no experience. It’s a “learn-as-you-go” situation so there will be really no one to train me.

I’ve increased my hours at work to work full-time so that I don’t have to stress about money this semester. I just want to find myself in a situation where I can be saving, planning to move out, paying down debt… it all looks pretty on paper but it might be difficult to accomplish.

School starts tomorrow and next week there is a GLSEN meeting that I have to be ready for. It’s my job to solve the spam problem for our webmail by moving it over to Gmail which I am not ENTIRELY sure how to do. Again, a learning experiencing.

Are you beginning to see where I might be taking on more than I can handle?

Music so far this year has been great. What are you listening to?

New Year’s Resolutions: Fashionably Late (99?-in-oh-nine) [19 Jan 2009|11:02pm]

In honor of Meghan’s New Year’s Resolution blog, I decided to make my own list of resolutions for the year.

Already this year has given me a lot of clarity, certainly a lot of gifts, for which I am incredibly grateful. I have so many new things to look forward to in 2009 and I want to make sure that I don’t waste a single day — although I do resolve to waste at least one day completely on doing nothing at all :) Here it goes… 2009… ready, steady, go.

 1. Listen to a random album chosen from every day of the indie-exchange archives in 2009.
 2. Bake a cake/cupcakes from scratch.
 3. Graduate from Arizona State University.
 4. Apply for graduate school.
 5. Move downtown.
 6. Get a dog!
 7. Sign up for yoga at Yoga Pura (or somewhere else that I can go as frequently as I like).
 8. Cook dinner for a friend.
 9. Visit Shelby, Meghan, and Alysha in their respective states (Oregon, Washington, Utah).
 10. Take on more than I think I can handle, and handle it with grace.
 11. Attend GLSEN Phoenix meetings every month.
 12. Stop using my credit cards once I am working full-time.
 13. Pay off at least three credit cards this year.
 14. Share favorite books and music with a friend once a month.
 15. See more local shows.
 16. Celebrate my birthday with close friends and overly expensive cocktails.
 17. Start my t-shirt quilt.
 18. Keep in touch with postcards and letters instead of e-mails and instant messages.
 19. Try sushi with a sushi lover.
 20. Beat the odds and flatten my tummy.
 21. Go on a short road trip with a good friend around Arizona and document the trip in photos.
 22. Read at least 25 books from my personal library that I haven’t read yet.
 23. Try a new Phoenix restaurant once a month with a friend.
 24. Take pictures more frequently (even with my crappy point and shoot camera).
 25. Write/maintain my resume.
 26. Work with Ben and make a new blog layout.
 27. Put together a photography portfolio.
 28. Take a painting class.
 29. Make something new at least once every week (writing, photography, mix cd).
 30. Clean and KEEP clean my car.
 31. Make more conscious food decisions without going overboard.
 32. Organize CD collection by release date.
 33. Get a part-time job at Anthropologie.
 34. Buy and wear more dresses!
 35. Wear fancy clothes on un-fancy occassions.
 36. Buy a new stereo.
 37. Listen to more Nirvana.
 38. Take piano lessons.
 39. Go through old magazines, make notes of websites, bands and books that I want to remember and give the magazines to someone that would like them.
 40. Go to MaFuCo!
 41. Catch up on old podcasts.
 42. Take vitamins regularly (Vitamin C, Vitamin B, SAM-e).
 43. Allow for “time-out”s whenever necessary — focus on what I need — do not let anyone else have control over me.
 44. Shoot more weddings with Alysha.
 45. Write personal essays before too many details are lost to poor memory.
 46. Go to a farmer’s market and make a meal from my purchases.
 47. Continue working through 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die and eventually start Tom Moon’s list.
 48. Ring in 2010 at Bikini Lounge with Morgan!

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts [16 Jan 2009|10:28pm]

I’m staying in tonight and keeping the evening to myself.

I watched what might be the last episode of Friday Night Lights and cried my eyes out. I’m going through all of my books and putting away what I’ve read and deciding what I will read next.

I took The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde off my shelf. We were supposed to read it for my African American Literature class but it was cancelled at the last minute. The spine of the book is cracked and it fell open to this poem when I flipped through it:

It has rained for five days
running
the world is
a round puddle
of sunless water
where small islands
are only beginning
to cope
a young boy
in my garden
is bailing out water
from his flower patch
when I ask him why
he tells me
young seeds that have not seen sun
forget
and drown easily.

I just thought it was lovely.

How are you?
